If we are going to have a lower than usual ratio of students to staff, it should be a lower ratio as compared to teachers, not well-paid administrators. I would work tirelessly to build greater student success with smaller classrooms and increased spending in our classrooms. At Tucson High I'm very proud to be a part of a group that raises money so that teachers don't have to take from their own pockets to buy supplies. We work hard at it because we don't think our teachers should have to both teach our kids and keep the ship from sinking. But it’s the District's responsibility to provide classroom supplies, not the responsibility of the parents.
This boat is headed towards disaster. If I were in the wheelhouse, we’d be moving towards fewer administrators, more teachers, and more money to the classroom. The first step would be to use available Prop 301 funds to lower class sizes. Then evaluate the efficiency and efficacy of administrators, freeze salaries and benefits and consider consolidation. Finally, raise the amount of money that goes to classrooms out of the savings that accrue. As a board member, that’s the kind of change I would bring to TUSD.
