Various board members and commentators have come up with a variety of explanations/excuses for the districts' behavior. The one that really smokes me though is the one that says "we need to withhold funds from our teachers in order to pay a legal team to fight for our desegregation funds in the future". How dare they? If they seriously want to maintain desegregation funding, they should show how it adds to desegregation! They should implement the Unitary Status Plan, written by and agreed to by all of the involved parties, including the GUILTY party, TUSD itself. Instead, the board majority consistently increases desegregation spending on legal teams that challenge the Unitary Status Plan (the last one has been given a contract of up to a million dollars a year!) and drags out the desegregation process by taking a contentious instead of a collaborative approach. They berate the Special Master and plaintiff reps alike in an all-out and blatant disrespect for the process. They continue the kind of historical misuse of desegregation funds that makes them an easy target for removal.
We need to desegregate the District, not just because we are under a Court Order to do so, but also because we are in the year 2016 and it's outrageous that it is still an issue. We have a blueprint to do so but it is ignored, maligned and distorted. If anything should be an easy target for removal, it should be the compliant board majority itself, not the desegregation funding.
